3 Easy Steps You can Take to Protect our Oceans

After a beautiful sail on the Bay with OCSC’s Founder and President, Anthony Sandberg, my friends and I listened to captivating speeches by two ocean conservationalists, John Racanelli, (Executive Director to Sylvia Earle’s organization Mission Blue - http://www.mission-blue.org) and Dr. Wallace J. Nicols, Marine Biologist and Activist. Dr. Nicols (who goes by J.) is a Research Associate at California Academy of Sciences and founder/co-director of Ocean Revolution, an international network of young ocean advocates.

The main message of the evening was this :

1) Take less of out of the ocean (wildlife)

2) Put less in (pollution)

3) Protect the Edges (reef, mangroves, marshes, etc)

Here at Nectar Essences, we pledge to use earth and ocean friendly cleaners and products. We encourage you to take the same steps and reduce what is GOING into our oceans. We recommend the following changes :

1) Replace COMET with BON AMI.

2) Replace phosphate based laundry detergents with ocean friendly detergents.

3) Replace conventional dish soaps to biodegradable dish soap – like Method or Seventh Generation (no…Dawn is not good for the ocean. It may scrub little seals clean after an oil spill, but it is not earth or ocean friendly).

Free yourself of trapped emotions! EFT works for me.

What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and how has it helped the clients in my practice?

EFT is an energy technique created by Gary Craig to eliminate the charge surrounding stressful thoughts and emotions. It’s a complementary modality to flower essence therapy and aromatherapy.  It is done by stating affirmations while tapping on meridian points. I use it every single day in my holistic health practice.  On a daily basis, clients come in with the stories of their pain and suffering. The pain emanates from their hearts and as we use EFT, we watch as their pain (both physical and emotional) lift and disappear.  Underneath every disease is an emotional cause, it may be sadness, shock, anger,  lack of forgiveness or loss.

Here are some examples of EFT success stories:

- The Medical Doctor who suffered from incessant heartburn and couldn’t manage it with antacids. By tapping out the anger he felt towards his mother, the burning subsided in two hour long sessions.

- The child who suffers from food and environmental allergies. We tapped on him for 20 minutes. Allergies have not returned.

- The singer/songwriter who is addicted to prescription pain medication following a partial colectomy. We used EFT in his sessions until he became free of his addiction. He was under care for 2 months

These are extreme cases, but I use them to illustrate the point that EFT has worked for me as a Practitioner. I highly recommend it for those who have tried everything and cannot seem to get relief.

Ecobold’s Steffany Boldrini caught up with me at the Yoga Journal Conference last month. I really enjoyed meeting her and sharing flower essences healing with her and her audience. Hope you enjoy the interview.

Meeting a Legend, Robert Tisserand…Master Aromatherapist

At  Natural Expo West last week in Anaheim, I had the pleasure of meeting Robert Tisserand, author of numerous reference books on the topic of Aromatherapy and it’s healing applications. Robert’s book, The Art of Aromatherapy, is a classic and one of the first books I ever read on the subject. His dedication to aromatherapy research has had a major impact on me. Robert Tisserand is a living legend in the Aromatherapy World.

So, it’s needless to say, that when Robert came by and took a whiff at Nectar Essences and graced me with compliments, I was singing through the roof.

Check out Robert’s Website and do read the following taken from his website :

why do plants produce essential oils?

The essential oil in a plant has two types of function: protection and communication. It affords the host plant protection from pathogenic micro-organisms such as bacteria or fungi, and/or it deters herbivorous mammals from consuming the plant. The “fragrant cloud” surrounding the plant may attract a particular species of bee, for example, that will help the plant reproduce by cross-pollination when it visits similar plants in flower. Or as with mammals, insects that would otherwise eat the plant are deterred by the slowly vaporizing essential oil.

Consequently, it is not surprising to find that certain essential oil constituents are neurotoxic to specific insects, or act as insect repellents. Because essential oils have evolved to be so effective in deterring insects, natural crop protection sprays are being commercially developed. In other cases, the essential oil may mimic insect pheromones, fooling a male insect into believing it is homing in on a female of the same species. In a few instances, plants communicate with other plants of the same species through release of essential oil, warning of predators so that plants receiving the message will increase production of anti-feedant chemicals.

Many of the same chemical constituents that are found in essential oils are also biosynthesized by insects, and function as pheromones, communicating messages such as scent trail marking, gender identification or attack alerts. For many of the above reasons, essential oil constituents need to be volatile – they need to be released as and when needed, and they need to carry their “message” across space.

the evolution of function

It is not therefore surprising to find that essential oils similarly protect humans against certain disease-causing microbes – in many cases, the same ones that can damage plants. And, it’s not too much of a stretch to believe that the interaction with an insect’s nervous system, in the course of time, evolved to include interaction with mammalian nervous systems. Many essential oils are found to be either CNS stimulants or sedatives in humans. Nature is very good at adapting, and rarely invents something new when an existing invention will suffice. Just as essential oil constituents perform multiple functions in plants and insects, so they also do in mammals. Our bodies are biologically programmed to react to essential oil constituents, which interact with a variety of receptor sites, neurochemicals and enzymes, giving them a potential for therapeutic activity.

Essential oils are an important part of the chemical soup in which all life thrives, at least on land. In small amounts, we inhale them in the ambient air, and we consume them in many fruits and vegetables. They contribute fragrance to flowers, taste to food, and medicinal properties to herbs and spices.

The Divine Feminine is Returning

This email was sent to me yesterday. Jeannie Zandi in NM made the collage and wrote the following :
I am sensing a deep call for women to open and rise as portals of the Beloved in a powerful and new way — to take the throne and the crown of Love and stand tall in our true spiritual power and  instinctual knowledge of the interconnectedness of all things.

Over the last few months it has become clear: now is the time.  The Divine Feminine is returning and we are her emmissaries; it is through us that She is coming.  We are calling a circle of guardian woman-spirits to prepare ourselves to rise with the highest offering in response to this call, to heal and leave behind what is too heavy for the journey (in the form of grief, outrage, timidity, self-doubt and powerlessness) and freshen our hearts at Her well so that we may live and express a quality of truth and love that is transformative.  With the power of our connection to all of Life, we can join together in a field of positivity to sing Her here through our bodies, and allow Her influence to touch us and move through us.  For Her influence is none other than Spirit Herself, and She permeates all that lives and breathes in this created world.  This is an invitation with support to step into who you truly are as a woman and what you have come to bring in your highest expression, and joining with other woman-spirits, build a web of light for Her return.

Fun Gathering around Organic Soul Nourishing Food

Last night we celebrated our friend Anthony Sandberg’s birthday at Gather Restaurant in Berkeley and wow! I am ecstatic about this restaurant. Yet another reason why the Bay Area is one of the best places to live on Planet Earth. Ari Derfel, a friend of a friend, opened the restaurant December of last year. Ari is a visionary, bringing conscious action to every aspect of his restaurant.

What a beautiful world to step into : reclaimed and green interior, warm lighting and cheery ambiance,  locally sourced produce and meats, nourishing, delicious and innovative dishes. My taste buds, tummy and conscience felt fully satisfied. The all around favorite of the evening was the “vegan charcuterie” platter.

Vegan “charcuterie” consisting of :
- Mushroom pate, endive, romanesco broccoli, grilled Maitake, walnuts
- Roasted winter vegetable bread salad, Martin’s arugula
- Beets, tardivo, purple haze carrots, kumquats, mint, cashew “ricotta”
- Avocado seaweed salad, “Rio Star” grapefruit
- Chickpea puree, fried parsnips, breakfast radish, lemon, paprika oil

Having eaten vegetarian food from around the world (my family has been vegetarian for decades  - and believe me, i’ve tried it all!), I think I can say that Gather is my new favorite restaurant! Thanks Ari and everyone at Gather for a splendid evening!

Chakras by Didi

At the recent Yoga Journal, our booth was adjacent to Chakras by Didi. The owner, Didi Wong, became instant friends. She is an actor turned clothing designer. Check out her beautiful yoga inspired clothing.

I’m pretty flexible, but I don’t ever think I’ll be able to do this :)

Natural Hand Sanitizer

I have been traveling through Asia and everywhere I go, people are wearing face masks. I had my temperature taken as I entered a museum and was asked to use hand sanitizer when I walked into a hotel.

So, what natural alternatives exist to an hand sanitizer and face masks?

Here are my recommendations :

1) WASH with plain hot soap and water – anti-bacterial hand soaps and hand washes disrupt the natural bacterial layer (or acid mantle) of your skin. you are always better off using hot water and soap.

PURDUE PROFESSORS ENCOURAGES HAND WASHING OVER HAND SANITIZER

2) AVOID all synthetically fragranced lotions – the chemicals in synthetic fragrances damage your skin weakening your natural defenses. 99 percent of products purchased in your supermarket will contain fragrance chemicals (including non-scented lotions). your best bet is whole foods.

i recommend Pangea Organics products.

3) Make your own defense spray –

5 drops of tea tree essential oil

6 drops of clove essential oil

3 drops of lemon essential oil

1 drop thyme essential oil

1 drop oregano essential oil

2 oz water

5 ml vodka

mix all ingredients and put into a spray bottle. spray three pumps into palms of hands. rub hands together and cup them around your nose. inhale deeply.

inhaling essential oils brings the phytochemicals straight into your lungs and boosts immunity.

use liberally. avoid spraying in eyes.

Additional Information on Flower Essences

Many people have asked me recently where they can find more information about flower essences. Below I’ve placed some links to some resources in the Bay Area and abroad.

For those of you who are new to flower essences, you may not know that flower essences are equally effective when taken orally or topically. Since flower essences are vibrational remedies and work with the bio-energetic field of the body, they need not be taken orally for efficacy.

In fact, I prefer giving flower essences topically to animals, small children and for the average adult who takes so many vitamins, herbs and medicines and can use a change in routine.

In every body of Nectar Essences, you will find blends of 7 to 15 flower essences from around the world. Some of them I have created and some of them come from other amazing practitioners from around the world.

St. Germain Flower Essences – flower essence company from brazil. three generations of flower essence makers.  i love these essences and combine them with essences from around the world (plus essences I’ve made myself). I love these essences because they are from wildflowers and cultivated plants from around the world – they really reflect the diversity of brazil.

Teresita Espinoza Woters - my mentor Teresita is one of the most amazing flower essence practitioners in the world. (site is in spanish). she is an amazing practitioner, teacher and person. she is very involved in the international flower essence scene.

Ananda Apothecary – an online emporium of flower essences, essential oils and herbs

FES – FES makes brilliant essences and they can be found in all health food stores

Patricia Meyer – pat is a Flower Essence Practitioner and friend. Check out her site!

Gail at Cat Faeries – flower essences for Cats – oh yes, animals LOVE flower essences. (made is San Francisco!)

Tree Frog Farm – Flower essences from Washington State

Bach Flowers – Nelsons makes Bach Remedies. They are a great company. Personally, I prefer the energy behind these Bach Essences made by Healing Herbs of England.
Hope this information helps!
