The past and future of Medicine

On my recent trip to NYC for the New York International Gift Fair, I had the opportunity to speak with three future doctors. One was a woman named Michael Ann who I sat next to on the plane, another was Essie, a woman I met in the bathroom at JFK and the last was my godbrother Eric.

Michael Ann is finishing up her last quarter at Cornell Medical School. She is going into orthopedic surgery.  Her undergraduate minor was in Psychology and she has a good grasp on the psychology of healing. Essie is from the UK. We shared a cab from JFK to Manhattan and she told me that aromatherapy is an approved alternative treatment that is prescribed by doctors in the UK.  I guess it is even covered by insurance. Over dinner Eric told me he wished to learn more about nutrition. His 2 months in medical school really helped him become healthier and had the biggest impact on his health.

All three of these medical students were very interesting people who really inspired me. Each one was positive, kind, and seemed to really come from the heart. They were very interested in alternative medicine and well-being. We spoke at length about the spiritual aspects of healing.

I feel very positive about the future of medicine. I am very excited to see traditional medicine merge with allopathic medicine. This is an excerpt from Seawolf’s website:

To the Native Americans, ~Medicine~ is not an external substance but an Inner Power that is found in both nature and ourselves, and whether we follow these Teachings or those of others, they all speak the same words of wisdom

Earth Medicine and Medicine Wheel teachings indicate that is it the very act of regarding the Supreme source as an external personality outside the Creation that has actually insulated humanity from it and cuts us off from our Source. The Native American knew, as did the Masters of the Ancient Wisdom, that the Source was not ~outside~ but ~inside~ the Creation. Instead of looking outwards – ~up there~, to some place beyond reach, we should be looking inwards, ~within~ Creation itself, not outside it. Within ourselves not outside ourselves. Nature shows us that, for the closer we get to anything in nature, the more perfect it becomes.

We have to experience knowledge for ourselves in order for it to be acquired, and that is why Earth medicine encourages us to find the time to listen. To listen to the Earth and what she has to say to us. To listen to the trees and the flowers, the birds, and the animals that run, or swim or crawl – they are all calling out and saying something to us, but humanity has deaf ears. Even the rocks and stones that things to tell us, for they too, are manifestations of the One Mind.

That is why Earth medicine encourages us to look. To look inward so that we can better see outward. For Earth Medicine is a way of transformation – a changing of oneself in order that we might be one`s self and when that happens the world is changed as we see it. Earth Medicine and the Medicine Way is about movement and change. But that means using the Web and travelling the Circle and living what it is you want to learn.

Native American people regard every life as a Walk or Dance – a movement of creative energy around the Wheel of Life. The steps we take can tune us in to the rhythm of the planet and of the universe to form a choreography of harmony and beauty which is what the Soul Self intended.

Balance and harmony the Beauty Way was the spirit of the Native American peoples and of the Wise Ones of all races of old. For centuries this ancient knowledge has remained hidden, guarded in part by the shamans and by the descendants of the ~wise ones~ of many cultures to whom portions of it were entrusted. But for the most part it was withdrawn into the Great Unconscious but ready to surface again in the human Soul through the inner planes when, in the fullness of time, conditions on Earth made it necessary as well as possible. The essence of the ancient wisdom is once again becoming manifest and available to all whose minds are open enough to receive it.

Walk in Beauty and we touch others and the Earth with beauty and bring healing to the planet
