I went into Trader Joe’s today to grab some wild blueberries and I was shocked at what I saw…women and men who in their 30s and 40s with wrinkles around their eyes and stress on their faces. Has aging in your thirties and forties becoming the norm? Being the curious anthropologist that I am, I examined the contents of their shopping carts.
Packaged foods galore. Vegetables and fruits were no where to be seen. It made me a bit sad to see Americans looking dehydrated and worn. It is so ironic that the wealthiest nation has the biggest populace of nutritionally deficient individuals.
This, especially, after dining at Cafe Gratitude the night prior, eating enzyme rich raw fruits and veggies.
So here are my top 10 suggestions for a Diet Make-over
1) Make a pledge to remove all carbonated sodas and diet drinks. Try sparkling juices and water with lemon. lemon helps drive water into your cells and makes you better hydrated.
2) Dump your iodized salt. Get “Real Salt” or gray sea salt from Whole Foods or Trader Joes.
3) Do a switch-a roo with your sugar, equal and splenda for agave syrup, honey, and stevia.
4) Eat organic butter, coconut oil and skip out on the margarine.
5) Make a pledge to learn how to prepare dark leafy greens. Chlorophyll is your friend. It’s the best juice for building healthy blood and plasma.
6) Give your body a break from alcohol and caffefine.
7) Drink water 20 minutes before or after a meal – your digestion will improve if you let the stomach acid do it’s job. diluting your stomach acid with cold liquids will lead to indigestion and weight gain.
Take Fish Oils (purity certified) and Flax, Borage, and Evening Primrose oils. Fat is good for you and essential for supple youthful skin! You especially need these oils if you crave fried foods – which is your body telling you that it needs good fat.
9) Buy quality not quantity – look for quality meats and seafood. The higher up on the food chain, the more bio-accumulation of toxins. Eat a variety of meats if you are a meat eater. Eating only chicken breast is not necessarily as healthy. It’s important to eat a diet diverse in different plants, vegetables and animals.
10) Say ‘good-bye’ to processed meats like sandwich meat and hot dogs that contain tons of preservatives. These meats dehydrate your body and are full of low quality ingredients. There are more natural alternatives to these meats at Whole Foods if you want to keep them in your diet.
